What Equipment Do You Need for At-Home Personal Training?

Short answer: far less than you think. Here's exactly what shows up at your door and what (if anything) helps to have on hand.

What Equipment Do You Need for At-Home Personal Training?

One of the most common questions I get about in-home training is, "But I don't have any equipment — can we still train?" The answer is yes, absolutely. I bring everything we need. But it helps to understand what that looks like, so you know what to expect and what (if anything) is worth having on hand.

What I bring to every session

You don't need to buy a thing to get started. I arrive with a kit that covers a full, effective workout:

  • A set of dumbbells in a few weights, so we can match the load to each exercise.
  • Resistance bands of varying tensions for warm-ups, mobility, and accessory work.
  • A kettlebell or two for hinges, carries, and core work.
  • A mat for floor work, stretching, and comfort.
  • Any specialty tools your specific program calls for.

What helps to have (but isn't required)

If you already own a few things, great — but none of it is necessary. A clear patch of floor roughly the size of a yoga mat is all the space we need. If you happen to have a sturdy chair, a wall, or a set of stairs, those become useful tools too. As you get stronger and want to train on your own between sessions, a single pair of dumbbells and a band is a fantastic starter set.

You don't need a home gym

The myth that real strength training requires a room full of machines keeps a lot of women from starting. It's simply not true. Some of the best strength work happens with a pair of dumbbells and your own body weight. What makes it "real" is the coaching — proper form, smart progression, and consistency — not the equipment.

The Takeaway

You need almost nothing to start at-home personal training — I bring the equipment. What makes it effective is the coaching, not the gear.
