How to Begin Exercising When You Feel Out of Shape

If you feel out of shape and think you need to get in shape before you can work with a trainer, please let me gently correct that. Feeling out of shape is the exact reason to start — not a prerequisite to wait for. I've worked with so many women who delayed starting for years because they felt embarrassed, and almost every one of them said the same thing afterward: "I wish I hadn't waited."

Start smaller than feels worthwhile

The biggest trap is the all-or-nothing mindset — thinking a workout only counts if it's an hour of sweating. It doesn't. Ten minutes of gentle movement, done consistently, beats a heroic workout you do once and dread for two weeks. We start small on purpose, because the goal at first isn't fitness — it's building the habit of showing up.

  • A 10-minute walk counts. So does a 5-minute stretch.
  • Two short sessions a week is a perfectly fine starting point.
  • Doing something you barely notice is better than planning something you never do.
  • Consistency beats intensity every single time.

Pick a format that removes the friction

If the gym feels intimidating, don't go to the gym. In-home training, virtual sessions, or even a walk around your neighborhood all count. The best workout is the one you'll actually do, and the one you'll actually do is usually the one with the fewest obstacles between you and starting. That's why so many women choose in-home training — there's nothing to overcome except pressing start.

Find encouragement, not pressure

You don't need someone barking at you to do one more rep. You need someone who meets you where you are, celebrates that you showed up, and gently nudges you forward when you're ready. That's the kind of coaching I believe in — encouragement over ego, every time. When the people around you expect you to succeed, you start to expect it of yourself.

Give yourself grace

Some days you'll feel great. Some days you'll feel tired, sore, or unmotivated, and a 10-minute session is all that happens. That's not failure — that's real life. The women who get stronger are the ones who keep showing up imperfectly, not the ones who never miss a beat. Progress is built from a hundred small, ordinary choices, not a few perfect ones.

The Takeaway

Feeling out of shape isn't a reason to wait — it's the reason to begin. Start small, remove the friction, find encouragement, and give yourself grace.
